Busy Hiring Season Ahead at Discovery Air Fire Services

Discovery Air Fire Services (DAFS), the parent company of Discovery Aviation Academy, is gearing up for another busy hiring season. Right now, the Discovery Air Fire Services team is working hard to recruit the next batch of Fire Detection Pilots into its roster. This year the company expects to hire 15 new pilots for their bases in Dryden, Geraldton, Chapleau, and Sudbury. That number is slightly higher than average, as Discovery Air Fire Services typically welcomes around 10 newly minted pilots to the company every year.

Successful applicants will go through their Cessna 337 Skymaster ground and in-flight training at the Discovery Aviation Academy training facility in Sudbury, Ontario. Discovery Air Fire Services operates 19 Skymasters, making the company the largest operator of 337s in Canada, and one of the largest in all of North America. A variant of the 337 called the O-2 was used extensively for reconnaissance during the Vietnam War. Its high-wing, push-pull design offers great visibility which makes it the perfect aircraft for forest fire detection at Discovery Air Fire Services.

Over the years the Fire Detection Pilot position has served as a key stepping-stone in many pilots’ careers. Countless aviators have come to Discovery Air Fire Services from a previous position as a flight instructor to build Northern experience and valuable multi-engine pilot-in-command time. In the four years since 2007 alone, Discovery Air Fire Services has hired more than 50 pilots, who have gained the experience and skills needed to progress to commercial airlines such as Bearskin Airlines, Air Georgian, and Porter Airlines.
